Joseph's Dreams And His Obedience - Lesson

Joseph! The Eleventh Son Of Jacob. Genesis chapter 37 tells us about the boyhood of Joseph and how he got into Egypt. Let's get into the lesson.

Lesson's Objective
Though Joseph had dreams and got revealed that he would someday be in a position of royalty, ruling over his family and others, he never had pride but remained humbled. He obeyed his parents and honored them. When we obey our parents, the Lord is pleased and we are blessed.

Memory Verse
"Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord."  Colossians 3:20

Lesson Study
As God promised Abraham that his descendants would increase in number, so it happened. Jacob, Abraham's grandson had twelve son who are the twelve tribes of Israel.
Joseph was the eleventh son of Jacob. He was loved by his father Jacob more than any of his brothers because he was the son of his old age. So Jacob made him a robe of many colors. The coat Jacob gave his son was colorful, ankle length and probably more in keeping with what royalty wore; it was beautiful. The coat of many colors became a symbol of favoritism between father and son. This gift however, further aggravated the jealousy already felt by Joseph's ten older brothers.

Dream 1:  Now Joseph had a dream. This dream made his brothers hate him even more. "Behold we are binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheave arose and stood upright. and behold, your sheaves gathered around it and bowed down to my sheaf" said Joseph to his brothers.

Dream 2:  And he dreamed another dream. "Behold, the sun, the moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me." He said this to his brothers first and then his father. His brothers were jealous of him, his father rebuked him but kept the saying in mind.

Joseph's Obedience:  Joseph, even after getting revelations through his dreams that he'll rule over his family, he remained humble. Though he was his father's darling, yet he was willing to be his father's servant.
We see his eagerness to obey Jacob for Joseph goes forth immediately from the valley of Hebron to Shechem to find his brothers when he was asked to (v12-14). When Joseph learns that his brothers have moved to Dothan, he never hesitated to go to Dothan to find his brothers. Dothan was about a day's journey from Shechem. The distance from Hebron to Shechem was about 50 miles and the distance from Shechem to Dothan was about 15 miles. And Dothan was the place from where Joseph entered tribulations.

Points To Reflect On
-Joseph was humble. He feared and respected his father.
-Joseph obeyed his father immediately. He did not bother to travel long to do what his father asked him to do. He didn't  speak a word against, he just obeyed.
